Winter Wedding at Asylum Chapel in London

I make no secret of the fact that the Asylum Chapel in Caroline Gardens is one of my favourite venues to photograph weddings in London. It has an atmosphere all of its own – the atrophied decor, moody atmosphere, lack of heating and deceptively dark interior – which makes it a challenging space to photograph in but one of great joy at the same time.
The last time I was there was in November for Richard and Natalie’s winter wedding. I’d joined them in their Brixton flat for some getting ready shots then it was in an Uber and off to the Asylum Chapel.
We were in Peckham at the Chapel just for the ceremony and a few drinks, after that it was on to ‘100 Barrington Road’ (a former furniture factory and a sister venue to the Asylum Chapel). It displays its former industrial roots throughout the fabric of the building:
“100 Barrington is a versatile events space situated in Brixton.
Built in 1879 and starting life as a furniture factory, the building maintains the original brickwork, high ceilings, exposed beams, and open floor plan.
The main space is stunningly juxtaposed with the 24-foot-tall archway bar and the courtyard garden beyond.
The space is over 2000 sq ft, making it the perfect venue for a variety of events, including weddings, private parties, product launches, photo and video shoots, or for use as a gallery space.
You will find us on Barrington Road, just a short walk from the overground and the Victoria Line’s Brixton Station making it easily accessible from central London.” – from their website.
As with most of my wedding photography, my brief with Natalie and Richard was to capture the day as it unfolded with little or no intervention. It was a great crowd, and, moving from moment to moment, I was happy to let the day unfold naturally.
With any luck, I’ll be back photographing weddings at the Asylum Chapel soon – it is a lovely, constantly rewarding place to photograph. And the couples that choose to have their ceremony there always seem to be the perfect fit for my style of wedding photography.
