It’s always been an ambition of mine to photograph a wedding at All Souls Church in Langham Place. It’s such an iconic building at the top of Regent Street in London. It’s Spire is often seen in the background of BBC news reports from the BBC Television Centre that is opposite. I’ve always wanted to see inside….

And I did!

All Souls Langham Place Wedding

What a pleasure it was photographing the wedding of Laura and John. They are part of the church family there and it was very special that they could get married in the place that brought them together.

It was quite a small compact wedding for a few reasons (a pandemic, Laura’s family living in New Zealand, the lack of ‘evening do’ as the couple wanted to drive off in the afternoon to start their honeymoon) but I wanted to tell the full story. I started my day with Laura getting ready and showing her dress off to family via Zoom before we all travelled to All Souls for the marriage.

All Souls Langham Place is a big church however there were only about 20 people actually attending the wedding. Everyone else joining in on big screen via Zoom (dress optional but fancy hats a must). Balancing intimate coverage with the scale of the church was interesting and the type of story telling photography I really enjoy.

I’m never wed to an idea of the wedding day

I never approach a wedding with a set idea of how I want to photograph the day or what photos I’m going to take – that way I’m not chasing after something that’s not there but reaching to the story unfolding in front of me.

It has to be about ‘these people, at this place, at this time’ which creates new and interesting photography for every wedding I photograph. If I planned out every photograph I expected to take 90% of my day would be disappointment and missed shots!

I always find it’s a great idea to talk to couples before the wedding day to know the timetable and understand what is important, that way I can reflect that in my photography.
