Wedding Photography : Moment By Moment – The Double Hug

One of my favourite parts of the wedding day is as the couple leave the church or ceremony room just after getting married. It’s the chance for everyone to rush up and congratulate the couple and also the first time the bride will often have an opportunity to speak with all the people that have been invited on the day.

Friends rush to hug the Bride and Groom

Traditionally this is also the time when wedding photographers stop everything and make families stand in lines to have their photographs taken – I’ve never done that. It seems just crazy that when there is such a great outpouring of emotion you stop it and make everyone stand in regimented lines. You get such wonderful expressions and emotions as friends rush to hug the bride or groom and I’m always walking around with a grin on my face at this point to – it’s such a treat to photograph.

The elusive ‘Double Hug’

If I can let you into a little secret – what I’m always looking for at this point is the holy grail of congratulations, the elusive ‘double hug’. I don’t think this is a recognised ‘thing’ but just something that I’ve noticed and try to get for myself. It’s a photograph where you get a clear view of both the bride and groom simultaneously hugging people in the same frame.

Sounds easy, seems like it would happen every week? Oh no my friend there are many factors that prevent the ‘double hug’.Couples often drift apart from each other after the ceremony or seldom do the same thing at the same time or wedding guests will crowd around the couple making it hard to get the shot (I think they do this on purpose to spoil my game…).

One happy photographer, two congratulated newlyweds.

Here is one example of the ‘double hug’ being captured in the wild – this one played out perfectly in front of me. I saw a small wall to raise my self up on, stood back and waited for the wedding party to leave the church. Then both the chief bridesmaid and best man headed separately and simultaneously to the bride and groom – bingo! One happy photographer, two congratulated newlyweds.
